Random Drug Tests for Teachers?

In Charleston, West Virgina, a legal battle is being engaged over the desire of a local school board to randomly test teachers for drug use.

Let’s hope they don’t check for  antidepressants.  I would imagine that the percentage of teachers taking the likes of Zoloft must be fairly significant.

I think that random drug testing for teaching is NOT a bad idea. Teachers are responsible for about thirty students an hour for five hours a day? That is p to a hundrend and fifty students that teachers are responsible for everyday. Not only is there safety an issue, but what kind of role model is a teacher for their stdents if they are using drugs? I feel like your comment about Zoloft wouldn’t pertain to this issue because it is a perscription drug. As someone who takes Zoloft and knows its uses and effect, the use of Zoloft isn’t an issue for a teacher. It is used for such disorders as depression, anxiety, and obsessive complusive disorder. I feel like if ay teacher who was perscribed this drug was not taking it, not only the techer, but their students would suffer. Now illgal drugs on the other hand should be ested for due to the efects they put on the user. If teachers arenot even supposed to drink out in public due to the image they are portraying, whatdo you think would happen if they were taking drugs. Students look to teachers for guidance and that is NOT the kind of message any teacher I know would like to send out.

I also think that drug testing is a completely reasonable idea. As a future teacher, I would have no problems submitting to a drug test. A large part of being an educator is being someone that students can model themselves after. It is also a big safety issue if I teacher were to be under the influence of any type of drugs. I am currently studying to become a special education teacher of students with moderate to intensive needs. In many cases, these students need constant supervision and the influence of drugs could create an unsafe environment for these students. In the case of prescription drugs, I feel that if they have a valid prescription and are following the correct dosage by their doctors, there should not be an issue.
